Division optimistic for provincial budget

The Prince Albert Catholic School Division is hopeful about the upcoming provincial budget.

Education Director Lorel Trumier said due to provincial budget cuts over the last few years P.A. Catholic Schools were forced to make cuts.

“Sometimes it meant there was a reduction in a staff member along the way, or a reduction in a particular area, whether it was in maintenance or the like,” she said.

According to Trumier the reductions in funding also forced the school division to look for efficiencies in areas like transportation and procuring materials. She added every area was looked at for possible savings.

“Every element of our system took some of the brunt of the reductions,” she said.

Trumier said they would like their budget to keep up with inflation. The education director added if they were granted an increase the division would like to put it towards supporting kids needing extra help.

“If we have some additional funding that can help us staff and support those students’ we’ll be very grateful,” she said.

Trumier said they would also welcome the opportunity to be able to offer more elective courses to students in high school.

The Catholic school board has been advocating to the provincial government. Trumier said the division has as well been able to meet with both P.A. MLA’s and believe they have been heard.

“We just need sustained adequate funding to continue doing our work,” she said.
