Thevenot and Team Silvernagle earn spot at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts

Prince Albert will once again have a local curler in one of the biggest women’s curling events in the country.

Kara Thevenot, lead for Team Silvernagle was thrilled to be part of the victory at the Provincial Viterra Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Melville, Sask.

This is the second year in a row Thevenot, and teammates won the tournament. Not only was this year’s victory special because the national tournament is being held in Moose Jaw but also there was a sense of restitution having come up short in the provincial final in Melville in 2017.

“Just getting to make that game winning shot, sweeping it end to end. It’s pretty exciting, being part of a moment like that,” Kara Thevenot said. “It was our goal this whole season. We wanted to get back to the Scotties, we got a taste last year and we just knew it being in Moose Jaw, it is going to be even more thrilling having all those fans cheering for us.”

Having already competed in several Grand Slam events around Canada this curling season, Thevenot is happy to not have to travel for the national tournament.

“We know that there is going to be many more people who are able to come out and support this year. Having the whole province behind us with people that love curling, it’s a big bonus to play at home,” she told paNOW.

Team Silvernagle burst onto the national stage last year, finishing third overall at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Sydney, Nova Scotia. Thevenot said having that experience will help this year.

“We’re going to go in with a big goal but at the same time you can’t look to the end. The results will come on their own. We just have to worry about one game at a time and one rock at a time and go from there,” she said.

The team’s experience on the Grand Slam circuit has been a highlight for Thevenot this season but she said, ‘it was hectic.’

“We’re thankful to our employers who give us time off to do this stuff and obviously our families. Without them, none of us would have been able to go on the road as much as we did.”

The Scotties Tournament of Hearts starts Feb. 15, 2020 in Moose Jaw, Sask.
