R.M. of Prince Albert hires CSO to look after bylaw enforcement

A big change is coming to the way traffic tickets and bylaws are enforced in the Rural Municipality (R.M.) of Prince Albert.

Larry Smytaniuk, nwho is currently the Community Safety Officer (CSO) for the R.M. of Buckland, will be taking on more responsibilities. R.M. of Prince Albert Administrator Roxanne Roy said she’s excited about the hire.

“I think for the rate payers, seeing that kind of presence out there, will give them more peace of mind,” she said.

One of the advantages to having Smytaniuk patrolling, is as a CSO he has the authority to issue speeding tickets.

Up until now the R.M. has been using the Commissionaires to look after bylaw enforcement but Roy explained the R.M. received jurisdiction approval allowing Smytaniuk to patrol in both RM’s. She said in terms of added costs, rate payers will not see a change.

“We will be using the CSO on an as needed basis like if issues come up then we will be using him and he will be touring,” Roy said.

The R.M.’s current contract with the Commissionaires expires Jan. 31 and Smytaniuk will start the following day.
