Best Martial Arts Studio: LDP Martial Arts
For the third consecutive year, the undisputed champion in the category for best martial arts studio is LDP Martial Arts.
Head instructor Lucian Phillips who has over 30 years of training and over 20 years of international competition and coaching experience for martial arts, is very proud of this award.
“I have worked hard to get where I am and am very grateful for the public’s recognition.”
Last June, Phillips was promoted to black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, an accomplishment no other person in Prince Albert can lay claim to. Phillips also holds his fourth-degree black belt in Taekwondo.
“Other schools have a high level of grappler, but they don’t have a black belt in both. It’s a big advantage to my students,” he said.
In 2011, Phillips started LDP Martial Arts located at 243 South Industrial Drive and has been teaching Taekwondo, Jiu Jitsu, Kickboxing and Mixed Martial Arts ever since. Phillips who can recall having only one training partner when he first moved to Prince Albert, has seen his class sizes flourish over the past nine years, and he has no plans to slow down.
“The more I trained, the more people were coming in,” he said.
In addition to his own personal achievements, several of Phillips’s students have also gone on to achieve great success as well including Christina Vis, who in 2018 returned from a Taekwondo tournament in Sydney, Australia with a bronze medal. Ryan Rohovich, a professional MMA fighter, currently has a record of 4-4-0, and has another big fight coming up in February. Phillips has also coached provincial, western Canadian and national champions.
“I have had people lose 30 pounds in a year and keep it off. I’ve seen kids become more outgoing and confident and they deal with their stresses better because they learn how to express themselves in this class,” he explained.
“The biggest thing I want people to know is that the martial arts are a great way to keep anyone active and growing.”
In addition to TKD, kick boxing, and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu classes, LDP Martial Arts also now offers Pilates, weightlifting classes, and Playball, a sport development program for children.
