What's In A Name?

R.M. pursuing change of direction for road names

Jan 17, 2020 | 2:00 PM

A major undertaking has begun in the Rural Municipality (R.M.) of Prince Albert, and no road name sign is safe.

All the current names are being reviewed and could be subject to change. Administrator Roxanne Roy told paNOW there are several examples of road names that don’t make sense, one example being seven mile road.

“You would think it’s seven miles from Prince Albert, but it’s actually only four,” she said.

Roy added roads that don’t have names will get one. The process moving forward will be as councillors see something that stands out or conflicts, they will bring it to council for discussion.

“It’s either a case of fewer miles or more miles so it doesnt work,” Roy said.

Scott McMullin and his family have been living on seven mile road for 46 years. He said a change is long overdue.

“Yeah whoever named it seven mile road has got rocks in their head,” he said, adding it was more likely when someone originally measured the distance from Prince Albert, they used Central Ave. as the starting marker versus the actual city limits.

Reeve Eric Schmalz told paNOW council will likely use the original settlers names on roads moving forward. McMullin said he would be okay with his family’s name being used but thought council will likely take a different route.

“There’s one name here that everybody knows and [council] will probably push for that,” he said.
