New trial date set after alleged thief opts out of resolution

Jan 16, 2020 | 1:58 PM

A man facing several charges including possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of stolen property will require a new trial date after having a change of thought.

Tyler Bear was one of two people arrested after Prince Albert Police pulled over a vehicle on Sept. 12, 2019.

After searching the vehicle, police seized small quantities of methamphetamine and cocaine, as well as multiple weapons including a rifle, an axe, bear spray, and a stab proof vest. The vehicle itself was reported stolen earlier that evening.

Bear’s trial was scheduled to take place Thursday morning at Saskatchewan Provincial Court, after a previous plea of not guilty. Proceedings were cancelled though after he unexpectedly informed his council he was not prepared to resolve matters.

Crown prosecutor Elizabeth Addabor was then informed by Bear’s lawyer that Bear no longer wanted to enter a guilty plea. A new trial date was subsequently scheduled for March 17.

The co-accused, Bridget Naytowhow, is scheduled to make her next court appearance Jan. 22.
