Power Outage

SaskPower experiences brief outage Wednesday morning in Prince Albert

Jan 15, 2020 | 11:58 AM

SaskPower has determined what caused the power outage early-Wednesday morning.

“There was an issue with a transformer at a substation. It’s not entirely clear what caused the issue but it’s possible that it was caused by the extreme cold overnight,” SaskPower Spokesman Joel Cherry told paNOW.

Cherry explained the power went out at 3:15 a.m. and crews were able to get it back on around 5:30 a.m. Approximately 4,300 were without electricity during that time.

Cherry advised in the event of an outage it’s best to try and stay warm.

“If you have it, the best bet is a wood stove or fireplace. If you don’t, stay as warm as possible. Make sure you have blankets and warm clothing on hand,” Cherry said.

He noted residents can use a generator as well, but to do so safely to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.

He also noted Tuesday afternoon almost marked a new record for power usage by the utility, missing the previous mark of 3,072 megawatts by 70 MW.
