Legal resource fair coming to P.A.

The John M. Cuelenaere Public Library is looking to help Prince Albert’s residents access legal advice.

Monday the library will host a drop in legal resource fair. A number of groups have come together to put on the event, including the Law Society of Saskatchewan, Family Law Saskatchewan, the Government of Saskatchewan and Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan.

Lindsey Beaudry, programs director and staff lawyer for Pro Bono Law Saskatchewan said her organization believes it is important for people to be able to access lawyers. She added without support some people may not be able to access justice.

“Legal matters are very difficult and complex, often people have a difficult time navigating the court systems and the legal jargon that goes along with submitting court documents,” she said.

The legal resource fair Monday will be offering attendees information on a range of subjects from wills and estates to collaborative law and co-parenting. Lawyers who offer their services at the fair do so as volunteers. Beaudry said in her experience the local legal community has been supportive of volunteering their services.

“P.A. has a very close-knit group of lawyers that are pretty dedicated to the pro bono culture,” she said.

Beaudry explained allowing people to have access to free legal advice is also important as there are people in the province who are currently falling through the cracks.

“There’s a huge gap of individuals, that don’t qualify for legal aid, but also can’t afford a private lawyer, so we aim to serve that large gap,” she said.

The legal resource fair is set to run from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
