Home invader pleads guilty, receives four-year jail sentence

Jan 10, 2020 | 11:58 AM

One of two people charged following a violent home invasion in Prince Albert last fall, admitted responsibility for her actions and received a federal prison sentence.

At a hearing Friday morning at Prince Albert Provincial Court, Jenna Lee McGillivary, 26, pleaded guilty to the handful of charges she faced in connection to the Oct. 3, 2019 incident. The victim of the invasion was tied up and threatened with a shotgun.

According to a police news release at the time, a man and woman entered a residence in the 3000 block of Third Avenue East. A male complainant reported he answered the door after hearing repeated knocking, and was assaulted and threatened inside the residence. The man reported the suspects then left in his vehicle.

The stolen vehicle was later recovered by police. McGillivary was arrested near the 3200 block of Sixth Avenue East. Her charges included robbery, unlawful confinement, break and enter, uttering threats, and resisting arrest.

When given the opportunity to speak in court, McGillivary, a mother of three, explained she was dealing with addiction issues at the time of the incident.

Judge T. Healey described the incident as both “horrifying” and “terrifying” for the victim, and said McGillivary’s issues did not justify what she did that night.

“Your kids need their mom,” he said. “This is not a good place for you.”

Gillivary, who had no prior criminal record, ultimately received a four-year federal sentence, but was given four and a half months of credit for time spent in remand. In addition to being subject to a DNA order, upon release McGillivary will be prohibited from owning or possessing any weapons for 10 years.

The co-accused, Anthony Badger, faces a number of similar charges and is scheduled to make his next court appearance at Prince Albert Provincial Court on Jan. 14.
