The holiday season is not completely over as today is Ukrainian Christmas.

Many residents in Prince Albert marked the occasion at ceremonies last night and some continue their celebrations today.

However, one P.A. resident is getting the chance to take in Christmas festivities in Ukraine. Kathlyn Tessier is making her way around the country as part of a dancing and cultural tour. Tessier said being in the eastern Europe country has been a different experience.

“It is very different. Obviously there’s a huge language barrier. I do know some Ukrainian so I can get around,” she said.

Tessier got the chance to have the traditional Christmas supper in a village in the western part of the country, with 13 main dishes. The spread included perogies, borscht and fish dishes. After the meal Tessier and her group went to a bonfire where they danced and sang carols.

“Each village, there’s a huge Christmas tree set up and the bigger villages have a Christmas market, so food and souvenirs, you name it,” she said.

After taking in church service Christmas morning, Tessier got the chance to do some caroling which took her around from door to door where she met some of the locals.

“When they find out we’re from Canada, they’re like ‘Sit down, have some food,’” she said.

Tessier has been traveling around the country for five months, touring both rural and urban communities.

“I am extremely grateful to be part of this celebration,” she said.
