Shift in the winds

Snow shovels and extra layers will be needed as weather trends down

Following a balmy end to the year, the weather is in for a new-year makeover. The next couple of days will see temperatures fall below normal, with snow to follow.

“Over the holidays we had relatively-mild conditions, I think we got used to that. We’re actually going to start cooling off towards seasonal values,” Meteorologist Terri Lang, with Environment and Climate Change Canada told paNOW. “After a relatively-mild day (Monday) we’ll see a cool off tomorrow.”

According to Lang, the weather shift can be attributed to an Arctic high-pressure system being brought down by a shifting jet stream.

Along with the cold, a skiff of snow is also expected.

Starting Tuesday evening and falling through Wednesday, snow will cover a large swath of central and southern Saskatchewan.

“It will vary, but it looks like five to eight centimetres, if not more,” Lang said.

After a brief taste of bitter cold in early December, temperatures have been quite pleasant in the early parts of winter, which may make the recent change a bit more abrasive.

“We’re not getting into that ‘dirty cold,’ but it’s certainly getting colder than what were used to. Overnight lows getting closer to the -30 C mark and the daytime highs struggling to reach the -20 C mark,” she said.

Lang encouraged people to dress in layers and be mindful of snowy weather and it’s effect on the roads.

“Travel might be pretty tricky on Wednesday,” she said.
