Police identify man found unresponsive in jail cell

Jan 2, 2020 | 4:31 PM

The man found unresponsive in his cell at the Prince Albert Correctional Centre last Friday, has now been identified as 31-year-old Robert McAdam.

The newest information from the Prince Albert Police Service Thursday afternoon did not include the cause of death, but did mention the police investigation was not finished.

According to a paNOW Obituary, McAdam was from Ahtahkakoop Cree Nation and the funeral was held on Jan. 1.

A spokesperson for the Ministry of Corrections and Policing has confirmed there was a space of one hour from the time McAdam was found unresponsive in his cell at the Prince Albert Correctional Centre, to the time he was pronounced deceased in hospital.

McAdam was initially found at midnight by correctional staff, who then conducted CPR and contacted Parkland Ambulance for assistance.

Police have said the death was not suspicious in nature. At this time there has been no confirmation whether a coroner’s inquest will take place but it remains a possibility.

Section 20 of the Coroner’s Act, 1999, states the Chief Coroner shall hold an inquest into the death of a person who dies while an inmate at a jail or a correctional facility, unless the coroner is satisfied the person’s death was due entirely to natural causes and was not preventable.
