December snowfall amounts drop drastically

Dec 31, 2019 | 5:01 PM

If not for a snowfall on Christmas Day, this December would be the driest month on record in Prince Albert’s 134 years of weather record-keeping.

“We were looking at the driest on record with only about .6 mm of water equivalent precipitation having fallen in the Prince Albert region as of Dec. 22. Because we had that snowfall of the 25th, that has now bumped up the totals of precipitation up to 5.1 mm of precipitation,” Meteorologist with Environment Canada, Eric Dykes told paNOW. “We’ve gone from what would have been the driest December on record, to the 10th.”

Dykes explained low pressure systems kept a large majority of the stormy weather to Prince Albert’s North earlier in the month and southerly storms missed the province in the latter part of December.

Although not record-breaking, the 5.1 mm mark is far below the average of 16.7 mm.

Heading into the new year, residents won’t have to wait very long to receive snow.

“As of right now (Tuesday morning) we’re looking at five to 10 cm of snow during the day on Saturday. Just keep that in mind if you’re planning on doing any travelling on the (weekend),” he said.
