Sports Year in Review; Marauders and Crusaders share the Canadian Tire Classic before rematch

Dec 28, 2019 | 12:00 PM

The battles between the St. Mary Marauders and Carlton Crusaders on the football field make it to our Top Sports Stories for 2019.

For the first time ever in the eight years of the Canadian Tire Classic cup between the two teams, the Marauders and Crusaders ended up a tie. The game on Oct. 11 ended in a 27-27 stalemate, which resulted in a hilarious display of both teams taking their turns celebrating with the cup and even posing with a dual-team photo. As a result of the tie, both teams finished with an identical record and needed a rematch to see who would move on to the Tier II playoffs.

The Marauders won 23-11 on Oct. 18 and reclaimed the cup. The Marauders then went on to beat the Tommy Douglas Tigers 39-9 before falling in the Tier II finals to the Aden Bowman Bears 38-28.
