Murder investigation at Wahpeton

A 19-year-old man faces several charges including second degree murder, aggravated assault, and sexual assault, in connection to an incident early Thursday morning on the Wahpeton Dakota First Nation northeast of Prince Albert.

According to a media release from Saskatchewan RCMP, Nathan Waditaka will make his first court appearance on Monday at 9:30 a.m.

On December 26, the Prince Albert RCMP responded to a report of an injured 17-year-old female at the Wahpeton Dakota Nation Health Centre. After they arrived the investigators found her injuries were due to an assault. They then returned to the residence on the reserve where the assault happened

At the residence they found 19-year-old Zellall Highway suffering from life threatening injuries. Highway was quickly transported to the local health clinic where he was later pronounced deceased. An autopsy has been scheduled to take place in Saskatoon on Monday.

Waditaka was found at a nearby residence where he was arrested and was transported to hospital for injuries obtained during the assault.

The investigation is still ongoing with help from the Saskatchewan RCMP Major Crime Unit – North, the Saskatchewan RCMP General Investigation Section – Saskatoon and the Saskatchewan Coroners Service.
