Sports Year in Review; Canada’s best junior curlers reach Prince Albert

The 2019 New Holland Canadian Junior Men’s and Women’s Curling Championships being hosted in Prince Albert Jan. 19-27 makes our Top Sports Stories for 2019.

As hard as the local committee worked in planning and running the event, they didn’t actually have to submit a bid.

“We didn’t actually bid for this, which is I think an even bigger feather in our caps. New Holland, this is the second year they’ve been the title national sponsor,” said committee chair Bryan Rindal. “Last year after the event in Quebec, Curling Canada asked the New Holland people ‘where would you like to host it?’ And they picked Prince Albert, Sask. We haven’t had a lot of lead time to try and get this event together, but we’ve got a team second to none. They’re professionals.”

History was made on the ice as well, as Tyler Tardi and his third Sterling Middleton of Team B.C. won their third straight junior men’s title. No athletes previously have won three championships before, let alone in a row. They defeated J.T. Ryan and Team Manitoba 7-5 in the finals.
