P.A. dog park volunteer welcomes more potential parks

As Prince Albert city council considers building four dog parks along the Rotary Trail, a volunteer at the city’s only existing dog park is voicing his support.

“I commend council,” Dan Troupe told paNOW. “And I certainly think if council goes ahead and approves another dog park it will be used by an awful lot of dog owners.”

According to Troupe, Saskatoon has 11 dog parks, meaning there is one dog park per 25,000 people. A similar ratio exists in Regina, while Moose Jaw has a population of 33,000 and one park.

“Based on the ratios we could use one more park,” Troupe said.

Whether more than one additional park is needed, Troupe said he would leave it up to council.

The SPCA built their dog park, Central Bark, in 2010. It cost $39,000 with the most expensive item being the 6 ft tall chain link fence that circles the 3/4 acre area.

The canine leisure zone is located beside the Prince Albert SPCA building on the north side of the river.

Troupe said parks like Central Bark provide an important space for dogs to play with each other.

“The major benefit is the socialization of dogs. If you have a dog that is a little bit aggressive, socialization with other dogs lessens the aggression,” he said.
