Temperature increase and potential snow highlight pre-Christmas weekend

Christmas commuting can be stressful and hectic.

The latest forecast from Environment Canada could add another element to the mix.

“The wind has come up and that’s usually a sign that something is around,” Meteorologist Terri Lang said. “We are looking at a chance of light flurry activity through the day on [Thursday], likely [Friday] as well, there’s a better chance on the weekend for more. Monday looks like there is a good chance for some snow and then coming into Christmas, it looks like a sunny day with temperatures right around seasonal values.”

Prince Albert and area, according to Lang, should see at or below temperatures when compared to the normal averages for this time of year.

Before heading out this weekend, she urged motorists to use the Highway Hotline and to check the forecast.

Generally, holidays and long weekends also mean an increase in the amount of traffic on provincial roads.

SGI Manager of Media Relations, Tyler McMurchy asked drivers to slow down, enjoy the drive with the family and above all get to their destinations safely.

“If you’re off for the holidays, you have a little more time to get there,” he noted. “The people on the other end of that destination want you to get there safely.”

McMurchy hopes residents also plan safe rides home.

“Nobody wants to remember this holiday season, or any other, as the one where you have to deal with an impaired driving charge or a collision that could injure or kill someone. Let’s make those good holiday memories, not the other kind that involve impaired driving,” he advised.
