Stewart hired as new fire chief in Melfort

Dec 18, 2019 | 5:19 PM

The City of Melfort has chosen its next fire chief.

Shaun Stewart was selected after an extensive application and interview process by the City of Melfort.

Stewart is from the Prince Albert area and previously has 10 years of experience with the Buckland Fire Department, as well as 15 years with the City of Abbotsford Fire Department in B.C.

“He’s very much excited to join the team,” City Manager Ryan Danberg said. “We’re excited to have him come on board and take on a senior management role at City Hall.”

Stewart takes over for Jason Everitt who took a job in the Yukon.

Danberg said the position will be very similar to that of the one Everitt previously held.

“The focus for that position is protective services and the fire department,” he said. “And making sure that we’ve got proper fire inspections and fire prevention and as much engagement from the community on that regard as we possibly can.”

The Melfort Fire Department covers two villages and five Rural Municipalities in the area as well as the City of Melfort. This is the third fire chief to be hired in just over two years.

There is no word yet on if Stewart will take over the bylaw officer position as well.

Stewart was not available for comment.
