Dr. Stan and Lizbeth Oleksinski understand the importance of palliative care from both a personal and a professional perspective.

For 17 years the couple has operated the West Hill Medical Clinic, where Stan is a doctor.

On Wednesday they presented representatives from the Rose Garden Hospice Foundation with a $50,000 cheque.

As a doctor, Stan Oleksinski regularly deals with people at the end of their lives.

“There aren’t a lot of services in Prince Albert that are dedicated to palliative care, so it will be nice to have a centre that our patients can use,” he said.

“It’s a just a more comfortable setting for the final stages of life.”

Both of his wife’s parents passed away at a hospice in Regina.

She remembers the hospice for its welcoming environment.

“Even though you know that the end is near, you still can enjoy all those last moments together,” she said.

According to Marina Mitchell, with the hospice foundation, Wednesday’s donation brings them to nearly $1.6 million of their $4 million goal. She said the foundation has received several donations in the past few weeks.

“You know this time of year people are more inclined to give, so we’re grateful that these bigger donors are showing us their support,” she said.
