Decimated Mintos squad finds a way against scrappy Maulers, Springer ends it in OT
The Prince Albert Mintos had just 13 skaters on Saturday at the Art Hauser Centre and just one of their regular goalies, but were able to come away with the full two points in a 3-2 overtime win over the Yorkton Maulers.
Three minutes into the extra frame, ex-Minto Blake Duquette found a clear lane to the net and used his best backhanded deke. Mintos goaltender Joel Favreau flew across his crease and made a sprawling pad save. Mintos’ top scorer Dawson Springer picked up the puck, stormed into the Maulers’ zone, settled at the top of the left circle and ripped in the overtime winner. Favreau got the only assist on the goal.
The Mintos only had 13 skaters for the game as most of the core of the team was missing. Captain Chase Friedt-Mohr was with the Spokane Chiefs, top-line forward Chase Bertholet’s up with the Winnipeg ICE. Starting goaltender Spencer Welke was out nursing an injury (knee), as were assistant captain Cooper Chisholm (ankle) and Dawson Brace (shoulder). That also doesn’t count Gabe Klassen, who’s been called up to the Portland Winterhawks for the rest of the year.
Chase Pauls and Kody Willick scored for the Mintos in regulation. Duquette and Brady Grasdal scored for the Maulers.
