Chewing for charity: Toffifee competition benefits the Rose Garden Hospice

Dec 12, 2019 | 8:40 AM

Raiders staff and radio personalities exercised their sweet tooth for a good cause on Wednesday.

The 4th annual Toffifee Eating Championship was hosted at the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group Prince Albert radio station offices.

P.A. Canadian Tire Dealer, Malcolm Jenkins , the universe’s leading retailer of Toffifee, provided the confectionary for the chomping event and added a charitable incentive to this year’s iteration. For every treat consumed $10 would be donated to the Rose Garden Hospice.

The seven participants were given five minutes to gorge. At the end, the totals would be calculated and a champion would be crowned.

Once the competition began, fingers feverishly passed chocolate, caramel and hazelnut from box to mouth under the attentive gaze of the gathered crowd.

Raiders play-by-play man, Trevor Redden and paNOW Sports Editor, Jeff D’Andrea oversaw the proceedings, adding some comedic colour commentary to the goings-on.

After the timer buzzed and participants had chewed through as much Toffifee as they could stand, the tallies were totaled. All in, 154 individual pieces were consumed, 34 of them eaten by XFM Morning Co-host Kelly Taylor, which was enough to crown him champion for the 4th year in a row.

Malcolm Jenkins was on hand to personally congratulate Taylor and announce the donation for the Hospice.

“It came to 154 and I’m not good at math, so lets call it 200. So, that’s $2,000 to the Rose Garden Hospice,” Jenkins announced to cheers from the boardroom.

Board member for the Rose Garden Hospice, Marina Mitchell was on hand for the event. She was asked, if she’d ever seen a more interesting way to raise money?

“No I have not, this was quite the morning,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell thanked Jenkins for his continued support of the Hospice.

“It’s just wonderful to have that kind of person in the community that everyone looks up to. Everyone knows who he is, it’s great that he supports us so wonderfully,” she said.

Taylor, the toffee titan, was humble in victory.

“It was the least I could do,” Taylor said, in near dental and jaw muscle exhaustion (mostly feigned).

Having just missed last year’s record of 35 Toffifee’s consumed Taylor admitted he is slipping, but added he would start training to get back to his previous form.
