Raiders can’t slow down the tip-top Tigers

Dec 11, 2019 | 10:32 PM

The Medicine Hat Tigers are on some kind of roll right now, and the Prince Albert Raiders just happened to be in the way.

The Tigers beat the Raiders 8-4 on Wednesday at the Art Hauser Centre, marking the first time the Raiders have surrendered eight or more goals since Dec. 30, 2016.

But for the visiting Tigers, that’s nothing new for them. They beat the Saskatoon Blades 11-3 on Tuesday at the SaskTel Centre and have become the best offensive team in the league. They have 137 goals, 10 more than the Lethbridge Hurricanes, and have won eight of their last nine games.

The Raiders found themselves behind 3-0 early in the second period and were able to claw back to tie it up at 4-4 at the beginning of the third, but the Tigers scampered away with the emphatic win.

“A loss is a loss. It got away a little bit. They got the power play goal and it got away, but before that, I really loved the resiliency of our guys—I really did,” Raiders head coach Marc Habscheid said. “They brought it when they were down 3-0 and they just kept going and kept playing. It was just one of those games, we were just trying to catch up all the time. But I like the resiliency of some of our guys.”

Boston Bilous has not liked playing against the Tigers this year. He’s been pulled three times this year, with two of those coming against the Tigers. Bilous was pulled 46:51 into the game, surrendering six goals on 30 shots. The other time he faced the Tigers, he lasted just 6:40 and gave up two goals on five shots in a 4-2 loss on Nov. 23 in Medicine Hat.

“They had six, so that was a reason. Sometimes you have it and sometimes you don’t. I’m sure he wanted a couple back but that certainly wasn’t the reason why we lost,” Habscheid said on Bilous’ performance on Wednesday. “But you want to give the other guy a chance, sometimes it’s good to just get him out.”

Carter Serhyenko came in on mop up duty, stopping six of eight shots.

Ryan Chyzowski and Brett Kemp each had a hat trick. Rookie Cole Sillinger scored a goal and had four primary assists. Cole Clayton also had a goal and an assist.

Spencer Moe had a pair of the Raiders to lead them offensively, but still wanted to provide more offence for his team, especially early in the game when the Raiders fell behind 3-0.

“We talked about it, it’s something that our leadership group had to step up on. Habby’s touched base on that, even days before leading up to this game, like last weekend for us older guys. I take accountability on that, that we weren’t that great. But I hope today was a good step forward for the three games coming up.”

Brayden Watts also scored his 15th of the year, and Kaiden Guhle buried his seventh goal on the season and fourth on the power play.

The Raiders fall to 19-6-3-1 on the year. The Tigers improve to 22-8-1.

Chase is on the case

Prince Albert’s Chase Friedt-Mohr was signed and called up by the Spokane Chiefs of the WHL. He will join the Chiefs on Saturday as a call-up when they take on the Everett Silvertips.

Friedt-Mohr has 25 points in 26 games this season for the Mintos in his 16-year-old year, despite being a blueliner.

Gone to Belarus

Four players belonging to both teams are participating at the Division 1A Under-20 World Championship in Minsk, Belarus. Raiders’ Aliaksei Protas and Ilya Usau are with Belarus, who are second place after two games with a win and an overtime loss. Mads Søgaard and Jonathan Brinkman are with fifth place Denmark.

Three coming up quick

The Raiders only have a day to prepare for a three-game weekend. They’ll take on the Winnipeg ICE on Friday and the Kamloops Blazers on Saturday—both at the Art Hauser Centre, before heading down to Saskatoon to face the Blades on Sunday.
