Councillor wants dog parks built along Rotary Trail

P.A. City Council is considering creating off leash dog parks around the city.

In a motion introduced at Monday night’s council meeting, Coun. Charlene Miller asked administration to look at the cost of building off leash canine leisure zones at each of the city’s four corners along the Rotary Trail.

In particular she suggested the area between 7th Ave. W. and 8th Ave. W. along River St. as a prime location for one of the potential parks.

She said right now people are improvising areas to let their canine companions off the leash to play.

“I drive around the city, and in various ball parks there are residents using gated and fenced in ball parks for their dogs, which is gross to say the least,” she told council.

Coun. Ted Zurakowski said some communities have unfenced dog parks, a low cost option the city could consider.

“For example, west and south of the field house: open field, some treed area. Put a couple signs ‘off leash dog park,’ there you go,” he said during the meeting.

The report on the cost of the potential parks will be back before council at a future meeting for discussion.
