P.A. golfer inks letter of intent to U.S. college

It was an exciting weekend for Prince Albert’s T.J. Baker.

The 17-year-old golfer who attends Carlton Comprehensive Public High School signed a letter of intent with the University of Arkansas for the 2020 school year.

“You know, it was awesome. To know that coaches down in the U.S.A are interested in someone from Saskatchewan, it was awesome,” Baker said.

After a tough start to his golf season in 2019, good finishes in the latter part of year helped catch the attention of scouts down south.

“A lot of those low scores helped put my name out there,” Baked added.

While Baker lives in Prince Albert and spends his summers in Waskesiu, his love of golf started in his hometown of Nipawin where he played as a young golfer on the Evergreen Golf Course.

“Personally, I think it’s one of, if not the best, courses in the province,” he said.

Baker thanked his family for their love and support as he transitions into post-secondary life in the U.S. He plans to study business at the University of Arkansas while playing golf. He also acknowledged Waskesiu Head Golf Professional Andrew Hnatiuk, and Taryn Rieger, his high school golf coach.

Before the next school year, Baker plans to attend as many tournaments as possible throughout the summer in preparation for his move.
