P.A. city council considers U-turn ban

Dec 10, 2019 | 3:04 PM

Prince Albert city council is pondering prohibiting U-turns in school zones.

Coun. Blake Edwards suggested the idea at Monday night’s council meeting.

He said he was responding to safety concerns raised by residents.

“[There’s] more and more traffic on the road each and every day, it’s occurring in our school zones on a regular basis,” he told council.

City administration will prepare an amendment to the traffic bylaw banning U-turns in school zones to be voted on by council at its next meeting in late January.

“It’s chaos out there in front of these schools,” Coun. Ted Zurakowski told the meeting, voicing his support for the measure.

“Especially the elementary schools where aunt and uncle and grandma Joe are picking up the kids, it’s chaos.”

U-Turns are already banned in Saskatoon school zones where infractions carry a penalty of $90.

According to the Prince Albert Police Service, there have been 196 tickets for speeding in school zones issued since September in the city.

Editors note: this story has been amended to include statistics for the number of speeding tickets in school zones.
