Kinsmen Ski and Snowboard Centre now open

Dec 7, 2019 | 1:13 PM

The Kinsmen Ski and Snowboard Centre at Little Red River Park is open for the season.

Today and Sunday they are open from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., and Monday through Friday from 4 p.m. – 9 p.m.

Operations manager, Nathan Stregger told paNOW this is one of the best opening day conditions they’ve had.

“We got that little cold stretch at the beginning of November, we made some snow, then it got warm and the last week here we kind of got the rest of our snowmaking done,” Stregger said.

The centre had to make more snow because most of the fresh powder melted over time.

“It doesn’t really help all that much unless it’s a couple of feet,” he added.

Opening day was slightly delayed due to the warm weather, as Stregger noted they’re usually on the slope by Dec. 1.

“The conditions are at par where they would be normally for this time,” he said.

When they opened this morning, around 15 riders at the terrain park were launching off of ramps and sliding on rails but Stregger expected more people as the day progressed. On weekdays he said they stay open late to appeal to the youth and then on the weekends they like to get families out on the hill early.

Ski lift passes are $16 for a day, but a season pass is a better deal for anyone planning more than 14 visits.Ski and snowboard rentals are also available at various prices.

Ben Myo, who was snowboarding on the terrain park this morning said the hill was in good condition.

“Honestly [it’s] really good,” he said. “This is my first time coming out to Little Red and it’s really nice considering the weather we’ve had. I couldn’t ask for anything more.”

Myo has been waiting for today since the end of last winter.

“Basically the second closing day is done I’m looking forward to the next opening day.”
