Local compost business launches special holiday initiative

A local compost entrepreneur is encouraging Prince Albert residents to hire her to make their holiday events more environmentally friendly.

For a fee, Keri Sapsford of Compost Corner will pick up all those Christmas dinner scraps and take them to a local farm to be turned into compost.

“If somebody had an office Christmas party, or if they compost all summer by themselves but don’t think that they can handle the big amounts that a party will entail, or a church or a group, then I can compost for them and a help make that party more green,” Sapsford explained.

Existing clients of Compost Corner’s weekly curbside pick-up program can request extra Christmas buckets free of charge.

In the year and a half Sapsford has operated Compost Corner, she estimated as of October, the initiative had diverted over 12,000 lbs of waste from the landfill.

Sapsford is passionate about the power of turning organic material into soil boosting compost. She cites its ability to reduce carbon emissions by trapping the compound in the ground where plants can use it to grow and the enhanced soil contributes to cleaner water and air.

“Basically there’s so many benefits of composting that I just think it’s really important for everybody to do,” she said.

“And it’s my mission in life to make it easy for people to make that environmentally friendly choice by composting for them.”
