P.A. to enforce new taxi regulations

A month and a half after Prince Albert updated its taxi bylaw, the city will begin enforcing the new regulations.

Key changes include mandatory cameras inside all taxis.

Mayor Greg Dionne estimates only two or three cars are not in compliance.

“We’ve been meeting with [taxi operators] long before the bylaw passed, so they’ve had lots of input and knew what was coming,” Dionne told paNOW.

Modifications to the bylaw were proposed in June of 2017 in response to safety concerns.

Dionne said video surveillance will protect passengers and drivers.

“We hope that’s going to deter some of the problems we have because now we’re going to have these people on video,” he explained.

On Friday night, a cab driver was robbed at gunpoint in East Hill. The incident follows a string of similar robberies in mid-November.

Under the new regulations, taxis are also forbidden from having any advertising materials on windows that would obstruct visibility into the cab. Additionally, they must display contact information for both the taxi company and bylaw enforcement so the public can report complaints or bylaw infractions.

In a media release, the city asked passengers to report any cars in violation to the bylaw enforcement unit.
