Prince Albert mother searches for answers, following son’s sudden disappearance

The last time Kelly Pickering spoke to her son Donald, she said he gave her a hug, told her he loved her, and explained he was going for a walk.

Six days have nearly passed and Donald has not been seen or heard from since. Pickering recalled there was nothing to suggest her son was unhappy, or he would not be returning home like he promised, adding her family has always been very close and affectionate.

“We wake up in the morning and it’s love you, love you with a hug and a kiss,” she explained.

Pickering recalled her son quit his job at a local stone chip repair and detailing shop a week prior to his disappearance and said he “had enough” but told her he would be looking for a new job. Around the house, Pickering said Donald is always a big help, and enjoys assisting his younger brother who has cerebral palsy.

“He would do things like he would put him to bed at night… he’d take half an hour off his lunch break to go get his brother and bring him home,” she explained.

Over the weekend the family conducted its own search but turned up nothing. Pickering said there are reports her son was seen on a bus in Saskatoon but added those also led nowhere. In his free time Donald is an aspiring writer, loves computers, and playing guitar. He recently bought two parakeets.

“You don’t go doing things like that if you plan on walking away,” she said.

The Prince Albert Police Service encourages people who live in the area to check their home security cameras. Shawn Kane was at home last Tuesday night when around 8:15 p.m. there was a knock on his door. When Kane looked out his window, there was a stranger standing on his doorstep, wearing a toque and a black jacket.

“I opened the door and said ‘Hello, can I help you?’ He’s like ‘No I’m just out for a walk in the neighbourhood and I want to make new friends,'” Kane said.

When Kane questioned the stranger if he was new to the city, the man replied ‘no’, and explained he lived only a few doors down the street to the east. Kane later found out the man was Donald Light.

“He looked a little depressed like in his face a little bit. He kind of stepped in and looked around. He looked very lost,” Kane recalled. “It was weird for someone to ask to be friends.”

“I think I am the last guy that [saw] him,” Kane said.
