Bears lose lead late against Hounds

In what was certain that the Prince Albert Northern Bears would come away with at least a point on Sunday, they ended up coming away empty handed in a 3-2 regulation loss to the Notre Dame Hounds. The Bears led 2-0 until near the second period and gave up goals with three minutes and nine seconds remaining. The Hounds ended up with the sweep, after beating the Bears 4-3 on Saturday evening.

The Bears had a 2-0 lead by the midway point of the second period with goals from Kailey Ledoux and McKenzie Mayo. Ledoux roofed one just 1:44 into the first period, and Mayo cut in from the blueline and went bar down 6:06 into the second.

Kaitlyn Severson scored with 1:26 left in the second period to get the Hounds within one heading into the third.

The Bears looked to be in control of the third, defending their lead until 17-minute mark when Annemarie Niedermier jammed in a rebound to tie the game up.

Bears captain Brooklyn Anderson was given a body checking penalty while chasing a loose puck with 1:16 remaining in the game, giving the Hounds a late chance on the power play. They took advantage as Olivia Leier scored the game winner with just nine seconds left in the game.

Bears defender Tori MacDonald left the game late in the first period after a collision while trying to hold the blueline. She was helped to the dressing room and did not return. MacDonald has a goal and an assist in nine games this season.

The Bears will play the Hounds again on the road in Wilcox on Friday for their next action. Then, the Bears will head to Regina to battle against the Rebels on Saturday.
