P.A. Pride to mark Transgender Day of Remembrance

Nov 20, 2019 | 4:32 PM

Prince Albert Pride will commemorate the Transgender Day of Remembrance with a vigil at the Mann Art Gallery on Wednesday evening.

Memorials are held annually around the world on Nov. 20 to honour those killed in acts of anti-transgender violence.

“Worldwide we know that this year there have been documented cases of over 300 violent deaths of transgender and gender diverse people,” Mann Art Gallery Director Lana Wilson told paNOW.

“That’s a really worrying statistic.”

Wilson added the actual number is likely far-higher due to deaths that go unreported, or cases in which family members may try to hide the fact the victim was trans.

On Wednesday night at the Mann Gallery, organizers from Prince Albert Pride will read the names of North American victims. Wilson noted trans women of colour suffer especially high rates of violence.

Speeches and interactive activities, including writing notes of support and encouragement, are also planned.

“I hope that we’re going to be able to provide a place where people can express these emotions, come together to grieve, to reflect,” Wilson said.

“But also come together in a hopeful way so that we can show support and show members of the community that they are valued and loved, and we will stand up against this type of violence.”

The event will run Wednesday night from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Mann Art Gallery.
