Town still putting final wrapping on proposed budget

Battleford residents will soon have an opportunity to see the town’s proposed budget for 2020 which it plans to present before Christmas.

The town expects to release the first draft to the public in the near future.

Mayor Ames Leslie said the goal is to have the budget approved on council’s Dec. 16 meeting.

“Getting the budget done before Christmas gives the town and administration the ability to get tenders out in a timely fashion so we don’t miss any construction [timelines],” he said.

One of the big projects coming up is the town’s lagoon wastewater treatment system upgrade and expansion.

Council is still reviewing some funding requests before the town will be able to present its proposed new budget for the year ahead.

Leslie said the budget was on the agenda for council’s meeting Monday but it wasn’t at the stage where it could move forward yet.

“There was going to be the first public presentation of the budget, but through council’s first session today they have some more questions on some of the asks, and it wasn’t ready to go to the public,” he said.

The town is looking at having a council-only session to work through some of the remaining requests within the next few weeks before the council meeting next month.

It also wants the public to have an opportunity to come forward with any questions they may have on the proposed budget before it possibly can be approved at the December meeting.
