Quiet weekend on road despite ice

Despite the icy conditions it was not a busy weekend for Prince Albert firefighters and paramedics out on the roads.

Both services were only called out to one vehicle collision.

Lyle Karasiuk, the director of public affairs with Parkland Ambulance, said motorists deserve credit for how they handled the conditions.

“Our drivers did really well, so hats off to them,” he said.

Karasiuk said drivers should be credited for taking precautions, like taking their time or staying off the roads entirely.

Alex Paul, the deputy fire chief with the P.A. fire department, said they generally get more calls when road conditions deteriorate early in the winter. He said they see fewer as winter progresses and people adjust their driving. Paul added it is nice people are making the necessary adjustments.

“It’s good to see people have taken heed of the driving warnings and weather conditions and it appears they’re driving more for the road conditions,” he said.

While P.A. and areas roads were fairly quiet, Parkland Ambulance did receive some calls related to people slipping on the ice. Karasiuk was not able to provide specific numbers, but he estimated paramedics attended to around six calls in the early morning hours related to slip and falls. He said it was not just older people who were in need of help.

“It was a wide range of ages for folks,” he said.

When conditions are icy as they were this past weekend, Karasiuk said people who are out walking should be sure to keep a number of things in mind. Specifically, Karasiuk recommended people walk like a penguin to avoid a possible fall.

“Don’t be in a hurry. Shuffle along,” he said.
