Driving High is a DUI

Nov 13, 2019 | 9:03 AM

Know the laws

Driving high is a DUI. And driving under the influence, whether it’s by drugs or alcohol, is impaired driving – and that’s against the law. Your ability to drive safely is impacted after smoking a joint, consuming an edible or having alcoholic drinks. Prescription and over-the-counter drugs can also have impairing impacts. And using drugs in combination with alcohol increases impairment significantly.

In Saskatchewan, you face the same tough consequences whether you’re impaired by alcohol or drugs. Even though cannabis is legal, driving high is still against the law. Whether you smoke it or eat it, there is zero tolerance for all drug-impaired driving in Saskatchewan and this applies to medicinal and recreational users alike.

Regardless of your method of consumption, driving impaired makes you a risk on the road, to yourself and others. In 2018 in Saskatchewan, 43 people were killed and 359 others were hurt in crashes involving alcohol or drugs.

Don’t drive impaired

Always arrange a safe ride home ahead of time. Leave your vehicle at home and get a safe ride to your destination. That way there’s less temptation to drive if your judgment is impaired later. Then make a plan to:

  • Have a designated driver.
  • Call a cab, a friend or relative, or a safe ride service for a ride.
  • Book a rideshare service.
  • Take the bus if that’s an option in your community.
  • Stay the night at the host’s place.
  • Book a hotel room close to the event.

And remember to be a good wingman – look out for friends and family, and always help them get home safely too.
