Above zero temperatures expected for the weekend

Even John Diefenbaker’s statue needed a scarf during the early part of November as Prince Albert saw a cool start to the month.

But an upcoming shift in temperature may soon melt the frost on the former prime minister’s sculpture.

“The big area of artic high pressure that’s been sort of parked over Western Canada will move over to the East and we’ll see a return to seasonal temperatures and then above seasonal temperatures (by the weekend),” Meteorologist Terri Lang, with Environment and Climate Change Canada said. “We’ll get some wind with that but we’ll see some warmer temperatures for sure.”

If you factor in both the daily highs and lows, the average mean temperature for November so far has been right around –10 C. Lang said that is on the cold side, falling about five to six degrees short of the 30-year average, but we don’t have to go back very far to see a November that was colder.

“It was colder last year,” Lang noted.

Combined with the upcoming warming trend she explained average temperatures could very well balance out come the end of the month.

She warned residents rising temperatures can create adverse driving conditions.

“It is winter, so be prepared. Dress appropriately and get your driving skills in order,” Lang asked. “People somehow forget how to drive (in between snowfalls), so always be prepared and be sure to check the highway hotline before heading out on the roads.”
