Public inquest for P.A. Police cell death set for next month

Nov 8, 2019 | 10:38 AM

The public inquest into the death of Ryan Kereluk in the Prince Albert Police Service cells last year will be held next month.

Kereluk, 34, was found unresponsive May 18, 2018, and died despite attempts to revive him. Police said he was arrested after officers executed a search warrant at a Sixth Ave. W. home May 16.

The inquest will take place at Court of Queens Bench on Dec. 2.

The coroner will try to establish the medical cause and manner of the death, and if it was preventable, as per the legislation governing deaths of inmates in jail or those in police custody. A coroner’s jury may make recommendations to prevent similar deaths.
