Hunting Season

No refunds for unusable game this hunting season

Nov 7, 2019 | 12:00 PM

Depending on where you live, hunting season is about to start or it’s well underway.

One change hunters should note, they’ll be out of luck on an extra tag if their wild meat turns out to be unusable.

“We no longer provide any form of compensation for big game meat, game birds, fish or any other harvested animals unfit for human consumption. This includes replacement licence’s or financial compensation,” Prince Albert Conservation Officer, Kevin Harrison said. “The Ministry provides the opportunity to hunters with a regulated opportunity to harvest a big-game animal. There’s no guarantee of success or the condition of the animal being harvested.”

Harrison noted this also includes refunds or replacement licences that would have been issued if your harvested animal tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD).

New to this year as well, a veteran of the Canadian Armed Forces, can apply for a free hunting licence.

Harrison noted that there are a few things hunters will have to be mindful of.

“If you’re heading out during rifle season, you have to wear colours. That includes you and anyone else accompanying you while you’re hunting. It has to be high-visibility clothing, specified in the regulations,” he explained.

He also said hunters are only allowed to hunt one half hour before sunrise and until one half hour after sunset.

If you see suspicious activity or have any questions, Harrison encouraged people to get in contact with them.

“There’s the provinces toll-free Turn in Poachers (TIP) line, 1-800-667-7561 or #5555 for SaskTel customers. You can also go online and report online at sasktip.com,” he said.

For all other questions, Harrison encouraged people to check out the 2019 Hunters’ and Trapping Guide.
