New plan laid out for remaining trailer park tenants

Nov 4, 2019 | 5:14 PM

A new plan concerning the North Bay Trailer Court has received unanimous support from the Rural Municipality (R.M.) of Buckland council.

At their meeting Monday, council was asked to pass a resolution, supporting a plan by the trailer park’s owner to essentially provide all the trailers with individual septic holding tanks.

Issues with the local sewer lagoon have been ongoing for years, but boiled over earlier this year when the previous owner decided to call it quits and issued eviction notices. The notices were cancelled in July when the trailer park was sold, but not before many of the tenants had already left.

paNOW has learned the park’s permit to operate off the lagoon runs out in Oct. 2020, and the new tanks will essentially get installed next spring. Planning manager Jason Kaptein explained to council the owner wants to cut costs.

“Their intent is they can pass along the cost of pumping it out so it makes the people living there a little more aware of how much water they are using,” he said.

Kaptein later explained the remaining tenants had been using “a lot” of water. Ronald Laliberte lives in one of the remaining 20 occupied trailers, and told paNOW he misses his neighbours, who panicked when they received the eviction notices in May.

“A lot of people had to abandon their trailers and 10 of them were demolished and the ones that are all empty, I don’t what they are going to be doing with those ones,” he said, adding some of the empty trailers are being used for spare parts.

According to a letter issued to tenants this month, the owners are “undertaking efforts to rent the remaining lots to new tenants.” The owners have also offered a referral bonus to any existing tenants, whose referral signs a lease agreement.

The new owners have yet to issue a public statement, and have not responded to requests for comment by paNOW.
