Conservatives sweep 14 Saskatchewan ridings

As a Liberal minority government was projected across Canada, a blue wave swept across Saskatchewan.

The Conservative Party won in all 14 of the province’s ridings, including that of longtime Liberal incumbent Ralph Goodale.

The Conservatives also won 20 of Alberta’s 21 seats, which prompted Prime Minister-elect Justin Trudeau to offer an olive branch during his victory speech.

“To Canadians in Alberta and Saskatchewan, know that you are an essential part of our great country,” Trudeau said. “I’ve heard your frustration and I want to be there to support you. Let us all work hard to bring our country together.”

In Regina-Wascana, Goodale was defeated by Conservative challenger Michael Kram, whom Goodale defeated by 10,645 votes in 2015.

Goodale had represented the riding since 1993.

Conservative Leader Andrew Scheer won Regina-Qu’Appelle, a seat he has held since 2004.

Outside of Regina and Saskatoon, the Conservatives held all of the ridings that they won in 2015.

Those rural ridings included Souris-Moose Mountain (Robert Kitchen), Yorkton-Melville (Cathy Wagantall), Moose Jaw-Lake Centre-Lanigan (Tom Lukiwski), Carlton Trail-Eagle Creek (Kelly Block), Battlefords-Lloydminster (Rosemarie Falk) and Prince Albert (Randy Hoback).

Newcomer Jeremy Patzer held Cypress Hills-Grasslands for the Conservatives as well. David Anderson had won the seat for the party in 2015.

In that election, the Conservatives won 10 of 14 ridings in the province.

This time around, Kevin Waugh won re-election in Saskatoon-Grasswood and Corey Tochor — who resigned from the provincial Saskatchewan Party to run in the federal election — posted a victory in Saskatoon-University.

Brad Trost won the Saskatoon-University seat for the Conservatives in 2015.

The NDP won three seats in 2015, in Regina-Lewvan (Erin Weir), Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River (Georgina Jolibois) and Saskatoon West (Sheri Benson).

The Conservatives won in all three this time around.

Warren Steinley was victorious in Regina-Lewvan, Gary Vidal unseated Jolibois in Desnethé-Missinippi-Churchill River and Brad Redekopp beat Benson in Saskatoon West.
