Hardware was given out at the 2019 Prince Albert Kinsmen/Raiders Sportsperson of the Year Celebrity Fundraiser Awards Banquet Saturday at the Ches Leach Lounge at the Art Hauser Centre.

Daulton Sinoski won the Male Athlete of the Year, Kara Thevenot was named the Female Athlete of the Year and Bryan Rindal was named the Sportsperson of the Year.

Daulton Sinoski, Male Athlete of the Year

Daulton Sinoski has made a name for himself at the University of Saskatchewan as both on the court as a volleyball player for the Huskies, but also in the classroom as well.

He won the SHSAA 5A Provincial Volleyball Championships in 2014 with the Carlton Crusaders, before joining the Huskies the following year. In his first season, Sinoski and the Huskies got second in the Canada West conference and finished fourth in the nation.

He was named as a USports First Team All-Academic for the past two seasons.

Sinoski couldn’t be at the ceremony on Saturday. He was with his Huskies in Calgary, taking on the Dinos in a two-game weekend series. His parents Paige and Chris accepted the award on his behalf and he did send his regards with a video.

“It’s truly an honour to be named the P.A. male athlete of the year,” Sinoski said. “I want to thank my coaches in high school, Jeff Court and Curtis Bender at Carlton, it was a great experience playing for them and helped me progress forward as a student athlete at the University of Saskatchewan.”

Kara Thevenot, Female Athlete of the Year

The game of curling has taken Kara Thevenot all over the country, but she’ll always hold P.A. close.

“Everywhere I’ve played, I’m proud to represent Prince Albert. It means a lot to me,” Thevenot said. “After we had a successful year, it’s always great to be recognized.”

Thevenot was named as the Female Athlete of the Year after her success playing on Robyn Silvernagle’s curling team out of North Battleford.

This year, Thevenot and her team finished with a bronze medal at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Nova Scotia, their first trip to the event.

“It’s good. Obviously, we took lots of things of what we learned as a team, going forward,” Thevenot said. “Even though we had lots of success, we want to keep building and keep our rankings up there to get to the big events and hopefully eventually get Olympic trials through Saskatoon. It’s just about staying consistent, and just keep building and developing as a team.”

They’ve also been invited to join the National Team Program and are looking to get a spot in the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials in Saskatoon in 2021.

Bryan Rindal, Sportsman of the Year

Bryan Rindal was named Sportsman of the Year for organizing and bringing the 2019 New Holland Canadian Juniors Curling Championships to Prince Albert back in January.

Rindal oversaw a committee of over 200 volunteers to help organize the biggest junior curling championship in the nation.

“At some points, it’s very nice to be recognized and at some points, it’s almost embarrassing because you got 200 people that were out there working and doing stuff, and I get to be nominated because I was the skip of the whole operation. It’s nice to be recognized and it’s really nice for our club.”

The top 28 teams from both the junior men’s and women’s divisions came to Prince Albert to slug it out throughout the week. The finals were shown on TSN. With the success of the event, the Prince Albert Golf and Curling Club also received some upgrades.
