Long weekend marks end of farmers market season

After 22 markets throughout the summer, the last Prince Albert Farmer’s Market of the season took place Saturday.

As the leaves turn brown and winter arrives, several venders set up their booth for the last time outside City Hall.

Vendor Shauna St. Amand said she has been a regular at the farmers market since 2002.

“The garden started out very slow but August (and) September it picked up quite well,” she said.

St. Amand said she owns a quarter section of land north of P.A. where she has four acres of produce that she grows and sells at market.

She was peddling produce such like pumpkins, beats, carrots, potatoes, and numerous jars filled with pickled vegetables.

“I take my extra vegetables home from the summer in the mid-market and then I put them into pickles and bring them back and sell them, so I don’t have any waste,” St. Amand said.

After doing it for 17 years, she said she has plenty of repeat customers who purchase her produce.

“It’s been a very good season this year,” she added.

Bob Gill, who has a family run table, said they have sold at the farmers market for 32 years. They sell a combination of baking and produce, including marshmallow squares and fresh loaves of bread.

“It’s been okay. We’ve had a lot of poor weather days. It wasn’t the best weather-wise, but sales were about the same and we’ve got all our regulars who come out to the market and support us very good so that’s one of the main things,” he said. “We’re both retired now and this is kind of what we do just to fill some time and keep us busy.”

Even though the outdoor farmers market is over, most of the same vendors will move into the Gateway Mall starting Nov. 2.
