P.A. Catholic Schools celebrate grad numbers

The Prince Albert Catholic School Division is celebrating continued impressive graduation numbers at École St. Mary.

Across various categories their rate for completion of grade 12 was well above the provincial stats.

“Year-over-year we have record numbers of students graduating,” Director of Education Lorel Trumier told paNOW. “But we’re also outperforming the province in the rates of graduation for both our non-First Nation, Metis, Inuit (FNMI) students and our First Nation, Metis, Inuit students.”

In 2019, École St. Mary saw a five-percentage point rise to 96 per cent in the amount of non-FNMI students graduating on-time compared to the previous year. The provincial rate is 87 per cent.

The on-time graduation rate for FNMI students increased by three percentage points to 56 per cent. Provincially that number is 43 per cent.

Another measure the school division is happy about is the rate for extended-time graduation, which is defined as a five-year period from the start of grade 10. Ninety-seven per cent of Non-FNMI students graduated compared to the 91 per cent provincial number. The rate for FNMI students in the extended-time category increased to 79 per cent, well above the provincial rate of 61 per cent.

“That’s a highlight for us because every time we have students graduating and our rates increasing it means were able to reach out to more students,“ Trumier said.

In a media release, École St. Mary Principal Mark Phaneuf credited the work of staff were doing regarding student engagement and relationship building in the community.

“Our focus at École St. Mary has been, and will continue to be on the needs of our students transitioning into, through and out of our schools,“ he said.
