Seniors’ transportation fundraiser

Friday is the day to give local seniors a big boost and to help them get out and about.

The Two Miles For Mary radiothon on 900 CKBI runs in the morning from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. with funds raised going to the Seniors’ Transportation Service.

It’s all about offering affordable travel and to help maintain seniors’ independence.

“These people we’re serving helped form our community and they deserve our support, so we’d like people to make a financial contribution,” Bill Powalinksy the CEO for the Community Service Centre told paNOW.

The service provided over 7,000 trips to seniors in the past year and they will be expanding to offer weekend service soon as well.

The public can pledge through the radiothon at 306-763-MARY, or head over to the Seniors Heritage Centre for breakfast and make a donation there.

This year’s so-called ‘Mary’ ambassador for the event – Pat Keller – said the professionals who drive the service vehicles are excellent and so is the price.

“It’s unbelievable, five dollars a trip is nothing, you couldn’t drive [your own] car for that,” she said. “The drivers always make sure we get in and out safely.”

Keller, who has lived in P.A. for over 50 years does not have a driver’s licence. She relied on her husband to drive her around but he’s in long term care now, so the service is invaluable to folks like her.

“I use it to visit my husband at Pineview, for grocery shopping, medical appointments, visiting friends and for whatever I want to do,” she said.
