For the love of literacy

New books for local schools

Sep 25, 2019 | 2:01 PM

Libraries at two local schools are getting a boost from the Indigo Love of Reading Foundation Adopt a School Program.

West Central Public School and Muskoday First Nation Community School have been “adopted” by the Gateway North Mall Coles in P.A. and the Eastgate Square Coles in Hamilton, Ont. respectively. Each school has a 50 book registry that supporters can shop for online. For every book bought, Indigo will match the donation with a second copy for the school. Cash donations can also be made in store.

Muskoday Principal Liza Brown said she’s incredibly grateful for the gift.

“We’re going to make those books worth it; we’re going to definitely be using them and we appreciate it,” Brown told paNOW.

Brown said as a former teacher, she’s seen the transformational power books can have first-hand.

“One of the things that I was always amazed at is a great story could lend itself to so many different teaching moments within the classroom and students love to engage their imagination,” she said.

She added she’s happy that the new additions to the library will help students share the joy of reading with their teachers and families.

“There are privileges that come from literacy. You get to see outside worlds, you get to understand things in another way,” she said.

A previous version of the story stated that each school would receive 50 books, it has been updated to more accurately reflect the campaign.
