Fire destroys section of local farmer’s crop

Roughly 30 acres of wheat were lost as a result of a fast moving fire Tuesday afternoon north of Prince Albert.

Just before 2 p.m. members of the Lakeland Fire Department were alerted to the fire three miles east of Paddockwood. The Buckland Fire Department was also called to provide mutual aid response. At the time of the fire, the wind speed was gusting up to 50km/hr.

“We were planning for the worst case scenario, this is the reason for calling in additional resources but in the end they were not needed,” Lakeland Fire Chief Chris McShannock said.

When fire crews initially arrived on scene, the fire was 40 acres in size. With the assistance of some heavy equipment supplied by local farmers, crews were able to quickly knock down the fire and minimize the damage. McShannock explained the farmers used their equipment to turn the stubble fields and create a separation between standing crops and the fire.
