Listless Leaves

Annual fall leaf clean-up

Sep 19, 2019 | 11:07 AM

The trees in Prince Albert are soon going to be shedding their summer adornment and the leaf blanket that will cover the city will have to raked, collected and bagged.

The layer of red, brown and gold may look great, but it can cause problems for the city.

“We actually send out crews to check the catch-basins in certain areas,” Roadways Manager Brent Kennedy said. “We try and clean them as best we can.”

Kennedy mentioned it’s a yearly check-up, but that they don’t have any specific program for clearing leaves around drains before the winter.

“A lot of times we don’t worry about that because when we winrow the snow, it seems like they (the leaves) disappear with the runoff,” he said.

Kennedy encouraged all Prince Albert residents to take advantage of the city’s yard-waste collection program.

They’re offering free pick-up of resident’s yard-waste on blue-bin collection days, providing the environmental debris is secured in a compostable yard-waste paper bag, until the end of October.

Although an overabundance of fallen leaves on a front lawn isn’t an offence under the city’s unsightly properties bylaw, residents are encouraged to use city-run programs to deal with their leaves.
