Abnormal temperatures smash daily-high records

Longstanding weather records wilted in Monday’s heat.

Environment Canada confirmed 13 communities broke their all time daily-heat records in Saskatchewan, including both Melfort and Prince Albert, which saw previous benchmarks eliminated by two degrees.

“Prince Albert got to 30.8 Celsius, that breaks the old record of 28.9 C set in 1888, so quite an old record,” Meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, Terri Lang told paNOW. “Melfort set a new record as well. They reached 32 C and that beats the old record of 30 C set in 1979. Their records have been kept since 1910 so not as old a record [as Prince Albert], but still significant.”

“I think it was welcome after last week’s cool, wet weather,” she said.

While not as impressive as breaking a 131-year-old record, Monday’s temperatures in P.A also marked a significant stat for the season.

“It was the warmest temperature reached all summer,” Lang said. “It just tells you how cool the summer it was.”

(Note: Environment Canada’s website is reporting the record high for Sept. 16, as 31.8 C. Lang explained that stat is based on NAV Canada data, and not Environment Canada’s official reading of 30.8 C.)

Despite the irregular temperatures, and people out and about enjoying the late summer swelter, residents found ways to beat the heat.

Parkland Ambulance reported that they were not calls related to any weather-related incidents Monday.
