Pedaling for Multiple Sclerosis

Sep 13, 2019 | 5:01 PM

Hundreds of people will be hitting high gear this weekend at Prince Albert National Park to raise funds for the Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society.

According to a media release from the society, on Saturday, an estimated 400 cyclists will take part in MS Bike Waskesiu with an expected $300,000 in pledges at the event.

“My MS made me a fighter and I became passionate about not allowing this disease to control my life. I wanted to do my part to raise funds to support MS research, so I joined MS Bike,” Wanda Bouchard Barry said. She’s the 2019 MS Bike Ambassador and has had MS for 32 years said.

“I’m entering my twenty-sixth year riding in the MS Bike, and during that time my team has raised approximately $400,000,” she said.

On Saturday, prior to the cyclists taking off on their one-day tour at 10 a.m., check-in, breakfast, and team photos will begin at 8:30 a.m.

After the cyclists get back, there will be beer gardens, music, and games from 1:30 to 4:30.

The funds raised will go towards MS research, advocacy work, and programs and services.

The research will go into treatments for people with progressive forms of MS and into finding new causes. It will also go into scholarships, translational research and vitamin D among other things.

In terms of programs and services, the funds will help people who live with the disease to better manage and cope.

According to the media release MS Bike is a pledge-based fundraising event that provides Canadians with the opportunity to ride through scenic and often spectacular parts of the country. More than 9,000 cyclists are expected to participate in 20 one-and two-day tours taking place across Canada between June and September.
