Local children to benefit from fall fundraiser

A Prince Albert mother plans to buy a new van for her daughter with money her family receives from the Optimist Club fall gala next weekend.

Amber Newhouse’s daughter Danika, 11, has cerebral palsy and requires full time care. Newhouse told paNOW getting Danika out to doctor’s appointments and social functions can be a challenge.

“We take her to lots of places so this gives her independence when we are travelling. As of right now we are lifting her into our vehicle, and pushing her in a stroller,” she said.

The Optimist Club Fall Gala has been helping local families for the past five years with emergency medical funding. Newhouse said the gala means a lot to families like hers.

“A lot of us cannot work outside the home with children like this so any extra funding to support our children, gives us a bit of piece of mind that we can have things,” she said.

Ethan Weberg, six, will also be benefitting from this year’s fundraiser. Ethan has autism, developmental delay and epilepsy and his family has been hoping to get a service dog for him but the price tag for that can be upwards of $30,000. Mother Andrea Weberg said she is very grateful for the support from the Optimist Club.

“It definitely is an encouragement to know that the community supports Ethan,” she said.

Weberg explained said the dog can be trained in many areas including seizure response, and can accompany Ethan to school.

The Fall Gala has been scheduled to take place Sept. 21 at the Prince Albert Exhibition Centre. In addition to door prizes and raffles, there will be a silent auction, games, supper and a dance.
